SIF

The sun-induced fluorescence (SIF) signal emitted by the chlorophyll-a of terrestrial vegetation has been shown to be a closer indicator of vegetation functioning than other variables traditionally derived from optical remote sensing data.

The TROPOspheric Monitoring Instrument (TROPOMI) aboard the Copernicus Sentinel-5P mission combines a relatively high sensitivity to far-red SIF with a daily global coverage and a medium spatial resolution. In addition to SIF, TROPOMI can provide reflectance data in the 675-775 nm spectral window, which is an important complement to SIF for the characterisation of vegetation structure and functioning. This configuration makes TROPOMI to be a powerful instrument for global SIF mapping.

A processor for the consistent retrieval of SIF and spectral reflectance from TROPOMI top-of-atmosphere radiance spectra was implemented by UPV during the TROPOSIF activity funded by ESA and coordinated by Noveltis. The TROPOSIF processor has been implemented in S5P-PAL as a pre-operational TROPOMI product.

Information about the TROPOSIF product

The TROPOSIF processor is maintained by UPV.

All users are encouraged to first look at the TROPOSIF reference publication and the Product User Manual (PUM) for a general description on how to use the SIF product.

Processor version history

Note that version 01.00.01 was backprocessed for full mission timeline with S5P Collection 03 RPRO and OFFL input products. Products produced with the previous version (01.00.00) have been removed from the data-portal.

  • v01.00.01 (2023-07-14)
    • Added missing time_coverage_resolution global attribute to L2 product
    • Changed sensing start and stop of L2B product to be non-overlapping
  • v01.00.00 (2022-10-20)
    • Initial public release

Known issues

The dataset does not provide a full timeline and products for several orbits are known to be missing. Information about known acquisition gaps in the data can be found on the Mission Status webpage of Sentinel-5P.

Interactive product browsing and download

Available product files can be selected and downloaded using the SpatioTemporal Asset Catalog (STAC) browser interface.

This browser interface does not currently support the more advanced search queries made possible by the STAC API. For that you will need to programmatically query the S5P-PAL STAC endpoint.

Support

Questions regarding this service can be send to the ESA EO Support Helpdesk.

This service is provided as part of the Sentinel-5P Product Algorithm Laboratory (S5P-PAL) and contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data processed by S[&]T.
