AOT

The Sentinel-5P Aerosol Optical Thickness (AOT) product was designed to monitor the daily global spatial distribution of aerosols in the Earth’s atmosphere. Together with the S5P Aerosol Index and S5P Aerosol Layer Height product it constitutes the suite of global aerosol products that can be used to monitor and analyse the spatial and temporal distribution of naturally and anthropogenically emitted aerosols such desert dust plumes, volcanic ash, sea salt, industrial pollution, etc.

Information about AOT

The AOT processor is developed and maintained by KNMI.

Processor version history

  • v02.01.00 (2024-06-18)
    • In the case of a missing VIIRS cloud product the cloud product inside the NO2 product is now used as a fallback option
    • This fallback option is now also used to deal with missing data inside the VIIRS cloud product
  • v02.00.00 (2024-02-03)
    • Based entirely on TROPOMI collection 3 data
    • Changed smallest wavelength bands to 354 and 388 nm
    • New set of look-up tables
    • Changed some configuration parameters
    • Geometrical cloud fraction now follows same definition as used for AER_LH product
    • Collocated aerosol layer height from AER_LH product added
    • Precision information for AOT added
    • Various small format fixes and updates to attributes
  • v01.01.00 (2022-06-01)
    • Initial public release

Known issues

The dataset does not provide a full timeline and products for several orbits are known to be missing. Information about known acquisition gaps in the data can be found on the Mission Status webpage of Sentinel-5P.

Interactive product browsing and download

Available product files can be selected and downloaded using the SpatioTemporal Asset Catalog (STAC) browser interface.

This browser interface does not currently support the more advanced search queries made possible by the STAC API. For that you will need to programmatically query the S5P-PAL STAC endpoint.

Support

Questions regarding this service can be send to the ESA EO Support Helpdesk.

This service is provided as part of the Sentinel-5P Product Algorithm Laboratory (S5P-PAL) and contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data processed by S[&]T.
